Which club should you replace first?

The driver, almost always. The gap between a five-year-old driver head and a current Qi4D is bigger than the gap between any two current drivers. If one club in your bag is old, this is the one costing you the most, and it is the easiest gain available.

Then your wedges. Grooves wear out faster than anything else in the bag and worn grooves cost you spin on exactly the shots where spin matters. A wedge is also the cheapest club in the bag to replace. If your sand wedge is more than three seasons old and you play weekly, it is done.

Then the putter. It is the club you use most and the one most golfers have owned the longest. A Spider mallet is a genuine upgrade over an old blade for anyone who misses the centre of the face.

Irons last. They are the most expensive part of the bag and the slowest to show a gain, unless you are moving from a players iron into something more forgiving, in which case the difference is immediate.

• Driver. Qi4D, Qi4D Max and Qi4D LS. Standard suits most golfers, Max adds draw bias if you slice, LS lowers spin for faster swings.
• Fairway woods. Qi4D fairways, in standard and custom builds. A 3 wood if you carry your driver a long way, a 5 wood if you want something easier off the deck.
• Rescues. Qi4D Rescue and Qi4D Max Rescue, plus the P-DHY driving iron. A rescue replaces a 3 or 4 iron for most golfers. The P-DHY is the low-flighted option for better players.
• Irons. Qi Max for maximum forgiveness and height, Qi Max HL to launch higher again, and P790, P770 and P7CB for single-figure handicaps who want a thinner topline.
• Wedges. Milled Grind 5 for full shots and control from the fairway. Hi-Toe 5 for open-face shots and soft sand. Most bags want two or three, spaced four to six degrees apart.
• Putter. Spider ZT and Spider Tour are high-MOI mallets for off-centre strikes. SYSTM2 is the classic blade and mallet line for a stroke with more face rotation.

You do not need to buy a set all at once and you probably should not. Replace the club that is costing you the most, play it for a season, then replace the next one. The exception is irons, which are worth buying as a matched set because gapping between them matters more than the individual heads do.

Common questions

How many clubs can I carry?

Fourteen under the Rules of Golf. A common set-up is a driver, one or two fairway woods, a rescue, six or seven irons, three wedges and a putter. You are allowed fewer, and plenty of golfers score better with fewer.

Should I buy a full set or build one club at a time?

Build it, unless you are starting from nothing. Buying one club at a time lets you get each one fitted properly and spreads the cost. A package set makes sense for a beginner and rarely for anyone else.
