Getting the size right

A golf shoe is not a street shoe and should not be bought like one. Three things to get right before brand comes into it.

Measure late in the day. Feet are at their largest in the afternoon and swell roughly another half size over 18 holes. A shoe fitted first thing on a cold morning will be tight by the back nine.

Fit the larger foot. Most men have a measurable difference between left and right. Fit the bigger one and take up the slack in the smaller with lacing or an insole, never the other way round.

Check width before you change length. If the pressure sits across the ball of your foot rather than at the toes, you need a wider last, not a longer shoe. Sizing up to get width leaves your heel loose, and a loose heel on a downhill lie is how people slip. adidas, Nike and Puma all make genuine wide fits in this range.

Thumb-width of room at the end, heel locked with no lift when you walk, no pressure across the widest part. If all three are true, the shoe fits.

Our take

Men tend to buy golf shoes on the sole and the logo, then spend two seasons quietly uncomfortable. Get measured for length and width first, then choose spiked or spikeless, then choose the brand. Doing it in that order is the difference between a shoe you tolerate and one you forget you are wearing.

Common questions

Should I buy the same size as my street shoes?

Start there, then check. Golf shoe sizing runs differently across adidas, FootJoy, Nike and Puma, and the same nominal size can differ noticeably between them. This is the strongest argument for trying them on in store.

What sizes do you carry?

Mens 5 to 15 across the range, with European sizing on some models. Not every model runs the full span, so the widest choice sits between about 8 and 12.

Do I need wide fit?

If you have been buying a half size up in golf shoes to stop them pinching, almost certainly yes. See wide fit golf shoes.

Can I get my feet measured in store?

Yes. It takes about a minute and it is the single most useful thing you can do before buying golf shoes.
