How to size a men's golf glove

Measure across your palm. Wrap a tape measure around your hand just below the knuckles, thumb excluded. Under 20cm is a small, 20 to 22cm a medium, 22 to 24cm a large, and above that an XL or 2XL. If you are between two sizes, take the smaller one.

Then check your fingers. If the palm fits but the fingertips bunch or fold, you want a cadet size. Cadet keeps the same palm width and shortens the fingers. The Nike Dura Feel and Nike Tech Extreme both come in cadet fit, and it solves a problem a lot of golfers have been living with for years without naming it.

Err on the snug side. Cabretta leather stretches with wear. A glove that feels slightly tight when it is new will be right within three rounds, and a glove that feels comfortable standing still in a shop is usually loose at impact.

Our take on men's gloves

Most golfers buy a size too big, because a loose glove feels comfortable when you are standing still holding a club at address. It is not comfortable at impact, it slips, and it wears through at the fingertips in a fraction of the time. If you are between sizes, go smaller.

Common questions

Which hand does a golf glove go on?

The opposite hand to the one you write with. Right-handed golfers wear a glove on the left hand. It is the hand at the top of the grip, which is the one doing the holding.

What is a cadet glove?

A cadet glove has the same palm width as a standard glove with shorter fingers. If standard gloves bunch at your fingertips but feel right across the palm, you are a cadet fit rather than a smaller size.

How long should a golf glove last?

A cabretta leather glove worn every round will start to go slick within a season of regular play. A synthetic or all weather glove lasts considerably longer. Rotating two gloves so each one dries out between rounds roughly doubles the life of both.
