Building a Callaway bag

The long clubs are all Quantum. Driver, fairway woods and hybrids come from the same family, which means the same head technology and a consistent look at address from the tee down to the top of your irons. If you are replacing more than one long club, staying inside Quantum keeps the flight and the feel matched.

The irons are where you make a decision. Quantum Max and Max OS are built to forgive off-centre strikes and launch high. Apex AI300 and AI150 are forged, thinner through the topline and built for control. This is the one choice in a Callaway bag that genuinely changes what the clubs do, and it is worth getting fitted for rather than guessed at.

Wedges and putter are where the strokes are. Opus wedges and Odyssey putters cover roughly half the shots in a round between them, and they are the two parts of the bag most golfers leave longest before replacing. If your budget only stretches to one more club this season, it should probably be one of these.

The Callaway bag, slot by slot

  • Driver. Quantum Max, Max D and Triple Diamond. Max suits most golfers, Max D adds draw bias if you slice, Triple Diamond drops spin for faster swings that already find the centre.
  • Fairway woods. Quantum Max, Max D, Max Fast and Triple Diamond, plus the Quantum Mini Spinner. A 3 wood if you carry your driver a long way, a 5 wood if you want something easier off the deck.
  • Hybrids. Quantum Max and Max OS hybrids, plus the Apex Utility Wood and Apex 26 Utility Iron. A hybrid replaces a 3 or 4 iron for most golfers. The Apex utilities fly lower and suit better players.
  • Irons. Quantum Max and Max OS for forgiveness and height. Apex AI300 and AI150 for single-figure handicaps who want a forged feel and a thinner topline.
  • Wedges. Opus SP and Opus SP+ for full shots and control, Full Toe SP for open-face shots and soft sand, CB12 for a more forgiving cavity back. Most bags want two or three, spaced four to six degrees apart.
  • Putter. Odyssey, which is Callaway's putter brand. Ai-One and Ai-DUAL are the current milled families, Tri-Hot and DFX cover blades and mid-mallets, and Toulon is the premium milled line.

Our take on building a Callaway bag

You do not need to buy a set all at once and you probably should not. Replace the club costing you the most, play it for a season, then replace the next one. Irons are the exception, because gapping between them matters more than the individual heads do, so buy those as a matched set.

Common questions

Does Callaway make putters?

Yes, under the Odyssey name. Odyssey is Callaway's putter brand rather than a separate company, and every Callaway putter is an Odyssey. Ai-One, Ai-DUAL, Tri-Hot, DFX and Toulon are all Odyssey lines.

How many clubs can I carry?

Fourteen under the Rules of Golf. A common set-up is a driver, one or two fairway woods, a hybrid, six or seven irons, three wedges and a putter. You are allowed fewer, and plenty of golfers score better with fewer.

Quantum or Apex irons?

Quantum Max is the game-improvement line, built to launch high and forgive off-centre strikes. Apex AI300 and AI150 are forged players irons with thinner toplines and more control over shot shape, and they suit single-figure handicaps.
