How to read an Odyssey putter name

Odyssey model names look impenetrable and they are actually a code. Every name has three parts, and once you can read them the whole range makes sense. Take the Ai-One Milled Rossie V T DB.

The first part is the family. Ai-One, Ai-DUAL, Tri-Hot, DFX, Damascus Milled and Toulon Design. This tells you the face technology and the construction, and it is roughly what you are paying for.

The middle part is the head shape. One, Two, One Wide and Double Wide are blades. Seven, Ten, Rossie, Jailbird and V Line Fang are mallets. The number or the name tells you the silhouette, and it has meant the same thing across Odyssey ranges for years.

The letters at the end are the hosel. DB is a double bend, CH is a crank hosel, S is a slant neck. This is the part that decides whether the putter suits your stroke, and it is the part everybody ignores.

Which Odyssey putter suits your stroke

  • Straight back, straight through. If your putter face stays square to the target line through the stroke, you want a face-balanced putter. Look for a double bend hosel, marked DB, usually on a mallet head like the Rossie, Ten or Jailbird. The face will not want to rotate and neither do you.
  • A slight arc. The most common stroke by some distance. A crank hosel, marked CH, or a plumber neck suits it, on either a wide blade or a mid-mallet. This is where most golfers should start looking.
  • A strong arc. If the face opens and closes noticeably through the stroke, you want toe hang, which means a slant neck, marked S, on a blade head like the One or the Two. A face-balanced mallet will fight you.
  • Longer and counterbalanced options. Broomstick and cruiser models take the hands out of the stroke and add weight above the grip. Worth trying if you have the yips, a sore back, or you have simply stopped trusting a conventional length.
  • The families, from accessible to premium. DFX is the entry point. Tri-Hot Square 2 Square brings tour shapes. Ai-One and Ai-DUAL are the current headline families with milled faces. Damascus Milled and Toulon Design are the premium milled lines.

Most golfers buy a putter for how it looks at address, and that is not the worst instinct, because confidence matters more in putting than anywhere else in the bag. But if you have never had one checked, get the length looked at. A putter even an inch too long changes your posture and where your eyes sit over the ball, and no amount of confidence corrects for that.
