Do you actually need a wide fit?
Most golfers who describe golf shoes as uncomfortable are in the wrong width, not the wrong length. Three signs point to width rather than size.
You have been sizing up. If you wear a 9 in street shoes and a 10 in golf shoes, you are not a 10. You are a wide 9, buying length to get width, and your heel is sliding for the whole round.
The pressure is across the ball of the foot, not the toes. Toe pain is a length problem. Pressure or numbness across the widest part of the foot, easing when you loosen the laces, is a width problem.
You loosen your shoes on the back nine. Feet swell over 18 holes, roughly half a size worth. A standard-width shoe that fits on the first tee can be tight by the 14th. A wide fit absorbs that.
The wide range, grouped
- Spiked and stable. adidas Tour360 Wide and Adipower Wide, Nike Infinity G NN Wide. Full cleated stability, wider through the forefoot. For the winter golfer who needs grip and width together.
- Spikeless and comfortable. adidas Adipower Spikeless Wide and Tour360 Spikeless Wide, Skechers Flow SL Wide. For the walker who wants width without cleats.
- Cushioned all-rounders. Puma Ignite Elevate 2 Wide, Ignite Elevate Wide and Avant 2.0 Wide. Soft underfoot, generous through the forefoot. For the golfer who walks most rounds and has given up on standard fits.
- Nike Infinity Pro 2 Wide. The roomiest forefoot in the range. For the widest feet, where everything else has failed.
Our take
Wide fit is the most under-served corner of golf retail and the easiest problem to solve badly. If you have bought three pairs of golf shoes and disliked all three, the odds are it was never the shoe, it was the width. Go into a store, get measured properly, and buy the width before you buy the brand.
Common questions
How do I know my width?
Have both feet measured for length and width, late in the day when they are at their largest, wearing the socks you play in. Most people have one foot slightly larger than the other and should fit the larger one. Any Drummond Golf store will do this.
Is a wide fit the same as sizing up?
No, and this is the mistake that costs people the most. Sizing up adds length, which lets your heel move and your foot slide forward on downhill lies. A wide fit adds room across the ball of the foot while keeping the heel locked.
Do wide golf shoes come in spiked and spikeless?
Both, across adidas, Nike and Puma. You do not have to give up the sole you want to get the width you need.
Do women's golf shoes come in wide?
Far less often, and it is a genuine gap in the market. Ask in store, because staff can tell you which women's models run generous even when they are not badged wide.
