Glover Scores Emotional Win At Wyndham Championship
America’s Lucas Glover has been through the ‘wringer’ during his more than 20-year professional career. The 43-year-old touted as a brilliant ball-striker, has painfully fought the ‘putting yips’, which has hampered his ability to produce consistent results. This week at Sedgefield Country Club, and in front of his family, the tour-veteran beat the odds winning the Wyndham Championship and qualifying for the PGA Tour’s season-ending FedExCup Playoffs.
Glover began the week in 112th position on the FedExCup standings. If he wanted to guarantee himself a berth in the lucrative three-event series (Top 70) he had to produce a victory on Sunday. And, win he did! The now five-time PGA Tour winner vaulted to No. 49 on the FedExCup standings.
Glover carded a 2-under 68 on Sunday to reach 20-under. His 8-under 62 on Saturday put him in contention for the title. American Russell Henley and Korea’s Byeong Hun An shared second place at 18-under. Henley bogeyed the final three holes to sign for a 1-under 69. An scored 3-under 67 final round.
Cam Davis and Adam Scott shared the honours as the best-placed Australians in North Carolina. The former Australian Open winners finished at 12-under an in a tie for 7th place. Davis returned a 4-under 66. Scott posted a superb 7-under 63 that included four unanswered birdies on the closing nine holes. It was a brave last ditched effort by the Queenslander to reach the FedExCup Playoffs, which tee off next week. Scott entered the week at No. 81 on the FedExCup standings. His T7 result moved him to 72nd, just short of the Top 70 who qualify for the Playoffs.
Jason Day (11th) and Cam Davis (62nd) are the only Australians who will move on to the Playoffs next week.
Ben Griffin owned No. 70 on the FedExCup standings to earn the last spot in the well-paid series. Justin Thomas was the first player to miss the Playoffs, finishing the season in 71st position.
The PGA Tour enters the season-ending FedExCup Playoffs at next week’s FedEx St Jude Championship to be staged at TPC Southwind.
