Rahm & McIlroy Make History in Dubai
Jon Rahm held off some of the game’s best players to win the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. The 28-year-old Spaniard became the first player to win five Rolex Series events with his record third DP World Tour Championship. Rahm overcame England’s Tyrrell Hatton and Sweden’s Alex Noren by two shots. Rory McIlroy finished two shots further back. The Northern Irishman’s solo fourth place won him the Harry Vardon Trophy for the fourth time. McIlroy ended the year as the world No. 1, European No. 1 and the FedExCup champion at the same time for the first time in his career.
Rahm added a 5-under 67 on Sunday at Jumeirah Golf Estates' Earth Course to earlier rounds of 70, 66 and 65 to reach 20-under. He was never headed during the final round en route to collecting his third worldwide victory this year. Rahm won the Mexico Open in May and collected the Acciona Open de Espana in October.
Hatton and Noren took a share of second place at 18-under. Hatton, aged 31, fired the best final round from the chasing pack with a 6-under 66 including producing a birdie at the 72nd hole. Noren signed for a 5-under 67. McIlroy scored a 4-under 68 to reach 16-under and claim solo fourth place.
Min Woo Lee was the only Australian who made the field at the European Tour’s season-ending event. The talented 24-year-old from Perth produced a 3-under 69 on Sunday to get to 7-under and finish in a tie for 12th place.
