Phalika Cheang and Dino Marzotto Hoist 2023 Drummond Golf Cup

2023 Drummond Golf Cup: A Drummond Club Exclusive Event

Phalika Cheang and Dino Marzotto have etched their names in Drummond Golf Cup history winning the 2023 Women’s and Men’s titles on Friday. Staged at the super impressive Peninsula Kingswood Country Club’s North Course, Cheang and Marzotto overcame their respective field that included this year’s state and territory champions at the premier destination. Cheang qualified for the final after earning the NSW Women’s Championship with 37 points at Macquarie Links in November. It was the second time the Moor Park Golf Club member reached the final after taking out her state title. Marzotto played his way to Peninsula Kingswood after piling on 38 points to win the ACT Men’s Championship at Fairbairn Golf Club in March.

Melbourne is known to dish up some filthy weather during big events. And, the conditions on Friday around the gateway to the Mornington Peninsula were no exception to that rule. Morning drizzle welcomed players as they warmed up pre round before high temperatures into the 30s and strong winds gusting up to 50kmph swept across the immaculately presented layout. Understandably, scoring was difficult! Dino Marzotto rose to the challenge blowing away all competitors amassing 37 points. The 25-marker produced an emphatic five-point victory to stake the 2023 Drummond Golf Cup Men’s Championship. Marzotto started his round with a three-pointer at the opening hole. The RMC Duntroon member didn’t look back moving through the turn with 19 points en route to becoming the only player in the elite field to best their handicap. Western Australian champion Andrew Benfield was the runner up in the men’s division with 32 points. The Vines Golf Club member finished two shots ahead of Rick Li (SA, handicap 25), Jeremy White (NSW, handicap 1) and Neil Sculthorpe (Tas, handicap 9).

It was a close finish in the race for the 2023 Drummond Golf Cup women’s title with four players finishing within a one point spread. Phalika Cheang (NSW) and Catherine Raes (WA) signed for 31 points. Both state champions were playing off a handicap of 17. Cheang took out the Australian championship on a count back courtesy of her strong finish with 17 points on the back nine. The two-time NSW state champion produced clutch golf over the final stretch posting two three point results at the final four holes. Raes, who won the Western Australian state championship at The Vines in October, claimed the runner up position. Caitlin Cotterill (Qld, handicap 3) and Jaime Hards (SA, handicap 1) finished one point back with 30 points. Cotterill won the Queensland state championship at Brookwater in July with an incredible 45 points. Hards is a member at Kooyong GC and a South Australia state junior representative. The 17-year-old qualified for the Drummond Golf Cup final after taking out the South Australian event in July.

The Drummond Golf Cup finalists were treated to two nights accommodation, golf and superb meals at Peninsula Kingswood Golf Club. Not to mention the pleasure of sharing the wonderful experience with arguably Australia‚Äôs most liked golfing personality‚ĶBrett Ogle!
