Tour veteran Geoff Ogilvy produced an impressive 7-under 64 in the opening round at The Players Series Victoria. The 2006 US Open champion trails New South Wales rookie Nathan Barbieri by three shots.

Ogilvy, who is the event host at Rosebud Country club this week, complied eight birdies and one bogey to sit in outright second place. The 43-year-old is in search of his first win on Australian soil since his 2010 Australia Open victory.

“I don’t feel any responsibility to play well but it’s nice that I am,” Ogilvy said after the round. “Every time I play I want to play well. The goal is always to get the feelings going again and get in the mix on Saturday and Sunday.”

Barbieri eclipsed the previous course record of 64 at Rosebud after firing a sensational 10-under 61. The 23-year-old from Bonnie Doon Golf Club made the turn in 29 shots. The 2019 Australian Amateur runner-up came home in 32 shots with four unanswered birdies.

Victoria‚Äôs Matias Sanchez finished at 6-under and is one shot back from Ogilvy in third place. Tour star Matthew Griffin and Queensland‚Äôs Aaron Pike are one shot further back at 5-under.

Kirsten Rudgeley leads the women’s field. The 19-year-old amateur golfer from Western Australia carded a 3-under 68. Rudgeley leads LPGA of Japan Tour player Karis Davidson by one shot.
