Horschel Wins BMW PGA Championship
America’s Billy Horschel fulfilled a career dream to win the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Golf Club in England. The 34-year-old held a deep admiration for the stunning layout in Surrey after watching the event on television as a child.
Horschel scored his maiden win on European soil by one shot over Thailand's Kiradech Aphibarnrat, England’s Laurie Canter and Welshman Jamie Donaldson. Horschel joins Arnold Palmer as the only Americans to win the coveted title. It was the Floridian’s second win of 2021 after claiming the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in March.
Horschel, who was left off the Ryder Cup team days earlier, went bogey-free over his final 29 holes including a flawless final round 7-under 65. He reached his winning 19-under tally for the event with a birdie at the 72nd hole.
Aphibarnrat fired the low-round on Sunday with a remarkable 8-under 64 to finish in a tie for second place with Donaldson (66) and Canter (67).
South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout was one shot further back at 17 under and in outright fifth place. The 27-year-old finished one shot clear of England’s Justin Rose and Andrew Johnston and Italy’s Francesco Laporta. Laporta, who held the 54-hole lead, was looking to become the fifth player in history to have won their first European Tour titles at the BMW PGA Championship.
Australia’s Adam Scott made a promising start to his search for his first win in 18 months after producing a brilliant 7-under 65 on Day One. The 41-year-old began the final round two shots off the lead. However, the former Masters champion was unable to mount a challenge on Sunday. He finished in a tie for 14th place with a 1-under 71 that got him to 13-under, six shots behind Horschel.
