Henley Cruises To Win In Mexico
Russell Henley scored an emphatic four-shot victory at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. The 33-year-old American now owns four PGA Tour titles. Henley’s last PGA Tour win came at the 2017 Houston Open. Henley’s 23-under total matched the tournament record set by Viktor Hovland last year.
Compatriot Brian Harman took solo second place. World No. 2 Scottie Scheffler was in a group of five players to claim a share of third place.
Henley went bogey-free through the opening 54 holes to enter the final round with a massive six-shot lead. It was the largest 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour since Jon Rahm at the 2020 Memorial Tournament and the fourth time since 2020 the American led the field into Sunday. Henley began the final round with four consecutive pars before making his first error for the week at the par 5, 5th hole. He rebounded with three straight birdies and enjoyed the rest of the round with a large margin. Henley signed for a final round 1-under 70 to reach 23-under.
Harman fired all four rounds in the 60s and finished with a 5-under 66 on Sunday to get to 19-under. The 35-year-old produced a hole-in-one at the par 3, 4th hole on Friday.
Scheffler set the El Camaleón Golf Course alight early on Sunday with a brilliant 9-under 62. The flawless round included seven birdies and one eagle. The 26-year-old American jumped 32 places to finish in a tie for third place at 18-under. He was joined at that mark with fellow Americans Joel Dahmen (65), Troy Merritt (67) and Will Gordon (69). Ireland’s Seamus Power (68) was the other player to share third place. Power was coming off a win last week in Bermuda.
Defending champion Viktor Hovland was trying to become the first player since Steve Stricker to win the same tournament at the same venue three years running (John Deere Classic 2009/ 10 & 11). The 25-year-old Norwegian was in the hunt for a three-peat after he opened the event with a 6-under 65. Hovland compiled 69 and 66 on Friday and Saturday before closing with a 3-under 68 to get to 16-under and in a tie for 10th place.
Jason Day was the only Australian to make the weekend. The 34-year-old Queenslander produced a remarkable bogey-free 7-under 64 on Friday to rebound from an opening round 2-over 73. The stunning round moved him inside the cut line. The former PGA champion carded 67 on Saturday and enjoyed a 5-under 66 final round to finish in a tie for 21st place.
The PGA Tour moves to Texas for next week’s Cadence Bank Houston Open to be staged at Memorial Park Golf Course. America’s Jason Kokrak is the defending champion.
