Berger Tastes Victory at AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am
Daniel Berger produced a clutch eagle at the final hole to win the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am.
The 27-year-old American walked up the 72nd hole at the famed Pebble Beach Golf links in a tie for the lead with compatriot Maverick McNealy. Moments later he stepped off the green with a two-shot victory.
After a solid drive to the fairway at the stunning par-5 closing hole, Berger striped his approach shot from 253 yards to find the middle of the green. He calmly buried the 30-foot attempt for an eagle. It was Berger’s fourth eagle for the week and his second eagle during the final round. It is the second consecutive event the winner closed with two eagles on Sunday after Brooks Koepka at the Waste Management Phoenix Open seven days ago.
Berger began the final round two shots behind overnight leader Jordan Spieth. The now four-time PGA Tour winner got off to a hot start scoring four under through his opening six holes to take a one-shot lead over fellow American Patrick Cantlay.
Nine players were within two shots of the lead midway through the final round.
Nate Lashley, aged 38, took the lead after he made a tap-in birdie at the short par 4, 11th hole. The former Real Estate Agent held a share of the lead with Berger until he faulted at the 16th hole with a triple bogey including four putts. Lashley ended up in a tie for fifth place with England’s Paul Casey at 14-under. Casey, who won in Dubai two weeks ago, carded a final round 4-under 68.
Spieth and Cantlay finished one shot better at 15-under and in a tie for third place. Spieth, who was looking for his first win since The Open Championship in 2017, closed his round with back-to-back birdies at the 17th and 18th holes. Cantlay opened the event with a staggering 10-under 62. The 28-year-old now leads the FedExCup standings.
McNealy, who was the world No. 1 ranked amateur golfer in 2016 and 2017, was chasing his maiden PGA Tour title. The 25-year-old Californian completed the back nine in just 31 shots to post an impressive 6-under 66. He ended the week at 16-under and in outright second place for his best finish on the PGA Tour.
Berger fired rounds of 67, 66, 72 and 65 to reach 18-under.
Jason Day was trying to become the first Australian to win this event since Brett Ogle in 1993. The 33-year-old trailed the lead by just two shots after his front nine. However, the 2015 PGA Champion didn’t mount a challenge down the home stretch and finished in a tie for 7th place at 13-under.
The PGA Tour remains in California next week for the Genesis Invitational when Adam Scott will defend his title at Rivieria Country Club.
