Viktor Hovland Produces Round Of The Year To Win BMW Championship
Viktor Hovland won the BMW Championship after overtaking world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler down the final stretch in Chicago. The 25-year-old Norwegian moved into top gear on Sunday with a course record 9-under 61.
The incredible round at Olympia Fields was the lowest final round to win on the PGA Tour this season. It was also the lowest final round score ever during the FedExCup Playoffs. Hovland’s historic round included coming home in 7-under 28 on the back nine to reach 17-under for the week. He was four shots off the lead at the turn. The now five-time PGA Tour winner will advance to the season-ending TOUR Championship in second place on the FedExCup standings.
Scheffler holds the number one position into East Lake. The 27-year-old American finished in a tie for second place with Matt Fitzpatrick. They finished two shots back from Hovland at 15-under. Both players signed for a final round 4-under 66. Fitzpatrick made the biggest jump on the FedExCup standings advancing 30 places to number 10.
Rory McIlroy claimed solo fourth place at 12-under. The Northern Irishman carded a 4-under 66 final round. The three-time FedExCup champion will start his title defense next week at East Lake in third position on the FedExCup standings. Jon Rahm and Lucas Glover will round out the top five players in Round One at next week’s TOUR Championship.
Cam Davis and Jason Day were the only Australians competing this week in Illinois. Davis, aged 28 from Sydney, produced a final round 2-over 72 to finish at 3-over in 40th place. He ends the season in 48th spot on the FedExCup standings and will miss next week’s TOUR Championship. Day managed an even par round on Sunday to end the week in a tie for 45th place. The 13-time PGA Tour winner is the only Australian to qualify for next week’s PGA Tour’s season-ending FedExCup Playoffs finale at East Lake Golf Club. Day heads to Georgia in 25th spot.
Sepp Straka made it through to East Lake on the number. The Austrian is 30th on the FedExCup standings after carding a stunning 4-under 66 final round. Sahith Theegala finished in 31st spot. The American bows out of the Playoffs after making a bogey at the final hole.
The PGA Tour moves to Georgia for the final event of the PGA Tour season. The Top 30 players on the FedExCup standings will compete for the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club. Rory McIlroy is the defending champion.
