Australian Adam Scott posted a bogey free 5 under 68 in the opening round of the PGA Tour’s Sentry Tournament of Champions. The former world No. 1 produced birdies at the fifth, ninth, 12th, 15th and 18th holes. In his first appearance at Kapalua since 2014, the major winner is well placed in a tie for ninth place.

Fellow Aussies Marc Leishman (69) and Cameron Smith (70) enjoyed solid opening rounds at the calendar-year opening event.

Defending champion Justin Thomas carded a flawless 8-under 65. The 27-year-old American shares the lead after Day 1 with compatriot Harris English.

In his debut PGA Tour round playing his new Callaway gear, Spaniard Jon Rahm scored three birdies over his final four holes to reach 3-under. World No. 1 Dustin Johnson is in a tie for 30th at 2-under.
