The former world No. 1 produced birdies at the fifth, ninth, 12th, 15th and 18th holes. In his first appearance at Kapalua since 2014, the major winner is well placed in a tie for ninth place.
Fellow Aussies Marc Leishman (69) and Cameron Smith (70) enjoyed solid opening rounds at the calendar-year opening event.
Defending champion Justin Thomas carded a flawless 8-under 65. The 27-year-old American shares the lead after Day 1 with compatriot Harris English.
