Scheffler Outlasts Morikawa To Win the Memorial Tournament
Scottie Scheffler is a rare talent! The 27-year-old joins Tiger Woods as the only golfers to collect the Memorial Tournament, THE PLAYERS Championship and The Masters in the same year. Scheffler improved his incredible record in 2024 to five victories from his last eight starts winning the Memorial Tournament at Jack’s Place in Dublin, Ohio by one-shot over Collin Morikawa.
With the win, Scheffler is the first player to tally five titles in a season since Justin Thomas in 2016-17. And, the dominant world No. 1 becomes the first player to win five times before the US Open in a year since Tom Watson in 1980.
Scheffler held the 54-hole lead at 10-under, four shots clear of Morikawa and Austria’s Sepp Straka. Just six players produced under par rounds on Sunday. In the difficult conditions, Scheffler grounded out a workman-like 2-over 74 to finish at 8-under. His clutch par save from five feet at the 72nd hole iced the win.
Morikawa was looking for his seventh PGA TOUR win. The 27-year-old American moved one-shot behind Scheffler with a stunning birdie from long range at the 12th hole. However, a bogey at the 16th hole gave his fellow Ryder Cup teammate a two-shot buffer with two holes to play. He posted a final round 1-under 71 to get to 7-under for solo second place. It was his fifth top 5 result this season.
Adam Hadwin earned solo third place at 4-under. The 36-year-old covered the opening seven holes on Sunday in 3-under to move within one-shot of Scheffler. The Canadian was in search of his second career win on the PGA TOUR and first win since the 2017 Valspar Championship. However, Hadwin made five bogeys on the run home to sign for a 2-over 74.
Jason Day and Cam Davis were the only Australians in the field. Day, aged 36, finished in a tie for 33rd place at 6-over after signing for a 5-over 77 on Sunday. Davis posted a 7-over 79 on Sunday for a 13-over total and a tie in 50th place.
The PGA TOUR moves to North Carolina for next week’s US Open to be staged at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club (Course No. 2). America’s Wyndham Clark is the defending champion.
