Schauffele Scores Maiden Major Title At The PGA Championship
Xander Schauffele is a major champion! The 30-year-old American collected the PGA Championship with a birdie at the final hole at Valhalla Golf Club to overcome compatriot Bryson DeChambeau. Schauffele, with seven PGA TOUR titles under his belt prior to this week, was considered one of the best players not to have won a major championship.
Schauffele’s performance in Kentucky was nothing short of remarkable. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medalist produced an incredible 9-under 62 on Thursday to tie the lowest round at a major tournament. And, he never relented holding the lead after 36, 54 and 72 holes to become the 11th player to win the PGA Championship with a wire-to-wire feat. On Sunday, he carded four unanswered birdies on the front nine to go out in 31 shots. On the run home, Schauffele rebounded from a bogey at the 10th hole with back-to back birdies at the 11th and 12th holes before sealing his career-best finish with a closing birdie.
Schauffele fired rounds of 62, 68, 68 and 65 to reach 21-under.
DeChambeau fired a bogey-free 7-under 64 to get to 20-under and solo second place. The 30-year-old LIV Golf Tour player was searching for his second major title after winning the 2020 US Open.
Norway’s Viktor Hovland finished at 18-under in outright third place.
Min Woo Lee was the best-places Australian finishing in a tie for 26th place at 9-under.
The PGA TOUR moves to Texas for next week’s Charles Schwab Challenge to be staged at the Colonial Country Club. Emiliano Grillo is the defending champion.
