Kisner Wins Wyndham Championship...Adam Scott Reaches Playoff

America’s Kevin Kisner collected the Wyndham Championship after he outlasted a PGA Tour record-tying six-man playoff at Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina. It was the third six-man playoff in PGA Tour history.

Kisner, aged 37, produced a stunning approach shot to three feet of the pin at the second playoff hole. Moments later he converted the short birdie putt to claim his first PGA Tour win since 2019 and his fourth career PGA Tour title. It was Kisner’s first playoff win after being 0-5 in playoffs. All six players made a par at the first extra hole with Australia’s Adam Scott missing a birdie putt from four feet to score his first win on the PGA Tour in 18 months.

Kisner, who started the final round four shots off the lead, carded a 4-under 66 on Sunday. The impressive round included clutch birdies at the 16th and 17th holes to reach the playoff at 15-under. Five other players shared the 72- hole lead after posting superb final rounds. Scott enjoyed a 65. America’s Kevin Na, South Africa’s Branden Grace and Canada’s Roger Sloan all signed for 66. Korea’s Si Woo Kim closed with a 64.

Scott, aged 41, produced four birdies on the outward nine holes. However, three early bogeys in his first seven holes suppressed his charge for the title. The 14-time PGA Tour winner then clawed his way into contention with four unanswered birdies on the back nine.

At the start of the final round, they were all chasing Russell Henley. The lanky 32-year-old American was in search of his first PGA Tour win since the Houston Open in 2017. Henley took a three-shot lead into Sunday and was looking to become the first wire-to-wire winner this season. Three other players have held the lead outright after each of the first three rounds this year—Sam Burns at The Genesis Invitational, Louis Oosthuizen at the Open Championship and Harris English at the World Golf Championships-FedEx St Jude Invitational. Henley covered the front nine in 1-under 34 and scored his third birdie of the day at the 10th hole to get to 17-under. He then bogeyed three of the next four holes. Henley missed a six-foot par putt at the 72nd hole to remain in the playoff. It was the third time this season he held the 54-hole lead without success. He also led into the final round at the CJ Cup last October and at the US Open in June.

The Wyndham Championship wraps up the PGA Tour’s regular season for 2020/21 as the three-event FedExCup Playoffs begins next week with the top 125 players on the standings competing at THE NORTHERN TRUST. England’s Justin Rose missed a five-foot putt on the final green to miss the lucrative Playoffs by one place at 126th position. Three players fell out of the top 125 after missing the cut. Ryan Armour dropped from 122nd to 127th. Patrick Rogers moved from 123rd to 128th and Bo Hoag went from 125th to 129th. Replacing them in the field next week is Chesson Hadley, Roger Sloan and Scott Piercy. Hadley signed for an incredible 8-under 62 that included a hole-in-one at the 16th. It was the best round on Sunday and moved him from 132nd to 125th. Sloan, who was runner up, jumped from 131st to 92nd. And, Piercy climbed from 126th to 106th.

Rickie Fowler will miss the FedExCup Playoffs for the first time in his 12-year PGA Tour career. The popular PGA Tour player missed the weekend at Sedgefield to finish at 134th on the FedExCup standings. Fowler, who has slipped outside the world top 100, enjoyed just one top 10 finish this season.

Ryan Moore will miss the Playoffs for the first time since it began in 2007.

The PGA Tour moves to Liberty National Golf Club, New Jersey for THE NORTHERN TRUST. Dustin Johnson is the defending champion.
