Jed Morgan and Su Oh Make History in Queensland
Young Australian golfers Jed Morgan and Su Oh enjoyed historic wins at Royal Queensland Golf Club on Sunday. Morgan, aged 22, produced a massive 11-shot victory to claim the Australian PGA Championship. The stunning performance smashed the championship’s largest winning margin by three shots—previously held by major champions Hale Irwin and Greg Norman. Oh, aged 25, scored four-shot victory to become the first winner of the inaugural Australian WPGA Championship. The Melburnian boasts the distinction of being the first woman to etch her name on the Karrie Webb Cup.
Morgan, who is a member at Royal Queensland, was always in command en route to becoming the event’s youngest winner in 60 years. The 2020 Men’s Australian Amateur champion carded all four rounds in the 60s—65, 63, 65 and 69 to reach 22-under. Fellow Queenslander Andrew Dodt took second place at 11-under. He started the final round with a 9-shot deficit and was unable to make any ground on Morgan signing for a par 71 round on Sunday. Louis Dobbelaar claimed outright third place one shot further back at 10-under. He edged out Min Woo Lee and Brad Kennedy by one shot. The pair finished in a tie for fourth place at 9-under.
Oh, who won the 2015 Australian Ladies Masters, claimed her second professional title after she delivered a stunning final round 3-under 68 to reach 10-under. The equal-low round on the final day included five birdies and gave her a comfortable four-shot win over Grace Kim. Kim scored a final round 1-under 70 to get to 6-under and two shots ahead of Sarah Jane Smith.
Morgan and Oh each earned $180,000 in prizemoney. With his win, Morgan secured three starts on the DP World Tour. And, he is best positioned to gain a full card for the European Tour’s 2022-23 season, which is offered to the top three players on the Australasian Tour Order of Merit.
