Glover a PGA Tour Winner Again at John Deere

Lucas Glover returned to the winner’s circle after a ten-year absence with victory at the John Deere Classic in Illinois. It was the event’s 50th anniversary. Glover ended a three-year streak of the long-serving tournament producing a first-time PGA Tour winner (2019 Dylan Fritelli, 2018 Michael Kim and 2017 Bryson DeChambeau).

The 41-year-old American, who last won at the 2011 Wells Fargo Championship, produced a two-shot win over compatriots Ryan Moore and Kevin Na. At one stage during the final round, 25 players were within three shots of the lead.

Glover moved to the top of the packed leaderboard with a superb 7-under 64. It was the equal best score posted on Sunday. He carded rounds of 68, 63, 70 and 64 at TPC Deere Run to reach 19-under. With the win, Glover collected his fourth PGA Tour title in his 20 years as a professional.

Glover began the final round four shots back from 54-hole leader Sebastian Munoz. The 2009 US Open champion got off to a quick start with back-to-back birdies at the opening two holes. He turned in 3-under 32 after scoring another birdie at the 8th hole. On the back nine, Glover rebounded from a dropped shot at the 11th hole with four consecutive birdies from the 12th hole. He then widened his gap in the lead with his last birdie for the event at the 71st hole.

Moore and Na posted final round 3-under 68s to share second place at 17-under. Moore, who remains winless since victory at this event in 2016, produced by far his best result for the season. The 38-year-old’s previous highest finish was T26 in February at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am. Na, was looking for his second PGA Tour win in 2021 after claiming the Sony Open in January. The 37-year-old now boasts five top 25 finishes this season.

Munoz fell out of lead on Sunday with an erratic final day that included four birdies and four bogeys. The 28-year-old Colombian took a share of fourth place at 16-under with American trio Adam Schenk, Luke List and Scott Brown.

Cameron Percy was the best-placed Australian. The 47-year-old Tour veteran closed with a stunning 6-under 65 to get to 14-under and in a share for 11th place.

The game’s best players head to England for The Open Championship at Royal St George’s Golf Club. Ireland’s Shane Lowry is the defending champion.
